Holcim US Increases Green Energy Efforts in New York
Holcim US, the nation’s top provider of sustainable construction solutions, is pursuing Purchase Power Agreements (PPAs) to bring renewable energy solutions.
Renewable energy is critical in the efforts of industrial sectors to reduce carbon emissions.
In New York, Holcim US announced its entry into renewable energy generation today. Participation in the New York Value of Distributed Energy Resources (VDER) program assists the industry leader in advancing its continued investment in on-site renewable energy generation, contributes to a circular economy by repurposing land, and maintains its commitment to sustainability.
“Holcim US is focused on driving significant progress to meet our Green Growth Strategy goals, so we consistently evaluate our environmental impact and opportunities to incorporate more sustainable solutions into our operations,” said Atl Martinez, Vice President of Procurement for Holcim North America. “Through the New York VDER program, we support not only our ongoing investment in on-site generation but also community solar projects that help drive greener outcomes for all.”
On Holcim’s non-mineable aggregate sites, the business will host three different solar arrays. These locations, when combined with additional offsite arrays under the Holcim VDER arrangement, are estimated to provide more than 80GWh of green energy each year. With renewable energy credits, the energy generated at these sites will effectively power seven aggregate and cement factories.
This latest renewable energy initiative is just one component of Holcim’s efforts to achieve net zero energy. Under the Northeast Regional Clean Hydrogen Hub program, Holcim is a strategic clean energy hydrogen partner. The company’s renewable portfolio has also grown to include a 40 MW battery storage system and 78 MW of solar arrays in Ohio, Maryland, and Arkansas. Holcim signed its first virtual power purchase agreement (VPPA) with the Electric Reliability Council of Texas in late 2022. (ERCOT). From supplying low-carbon cement and concretes to implementing electrification of corporate vehicles and trucks to pioneering carbon capture research, the company continues to prioritize sustainability.
