CEMEX Increases Production of Portland Limestone Cement in Colorado
As part of its efforts to reduce CO2 emissions, CEMEX USA announced that it has increased production of Portland Limestone Cement (PLC) at its Lyons, Colorado, plant, with the environmentally friendly, lower carbon building material expected to become the plant’s primary product by this summer.
CEMEX USA has increased PLC production across the United States as part of a suite of solutions to reduce the carbon footprint of its operations and products.
When compared to ordinary Portland cement, PLC can offer CO2 emission reductions of up to 10%. (OPC). When compared to OPC, finely ground limestone replaces a portion of the clinker in PLC, reducing the clinker factor by about 10% and CO2 intensity.
Extensive testing and customer feedback have revealed that PLC outperforms OPC in terms of durability and resilience.
“CEMEX is committed to being a leader in climate action, and we have aggressive emission reduction goals designed to positively affect our industry and our world,” said Jaime Muguiro, President of CEMEX USA.
“The increased production of Portland limestone cement is just one element of our plan to reduce our carbon footprint, and by making the lower carbon solution more available for our customers, they can help provide an even broader and effective impact.”
Despite the fact that PLC has been manufactured at the Lyons cement plant for more than 15 years, CEMEX is increasing production to better align with the company’s ambitious carbon reduction goals and meet increased demand for lower carbon materials.
In addition to Lyons, CEMEX USA has increased PLC production at its cement plants in Brooksville, Fla., and Demopolis, Ala., and plans to increase or begin manufacturing the eco-friendly product at other U.S. cement plants in the coming months.
CEMEX recently announced updated climate goals and implemented its Future in Action program to reduce CO2 across its value chain.
The company’s aggressive targets include reducing CO2 emissions by 40% by 2030 compared to 1990 baseline levels and working to achieve net-zero concrete globally by 2050.
As part of its commitment to climate action, CEMEX joined the Global Cement and Concrete Association’s (GCCA) and Portland Cement Association’s (PCA) carbon neutrality roadmaps (PCA).
CEMEX is also a founding member of the First Movers Coalition, a global initiative that brings together more than two dozen companies to promote innovation and the use of decarbonization technologies.
